Mark 8:36 (tap for more)
In our cultures, A LOT of emphasis is placed on earning money. In my culture many Christians parents emphasize their children getting a good education and positioning themselves to earn a good income and they often place more EMPHASIS on that that they ever did on the things of the Lord. The children then begin to learn that compromise with the things of God is acceptable because it fits in with meeting their main objective of making more money.
Based on Jesus’ statement, I think we can surmise that this culture isn’t the first or the only culture where wealth acquisition or even just the acquisition of certain items has been viewed as more important than our relationship with God. If you go back and read Ecclesiastes through to the end, you will learn that our relationship with God is the WHOLE PURPOSE of mankind.
When you look at scripture, a lot of emphasis is placed on raising your children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Not one word is dedicated to teaching us how to make money. Instead it says to focus on the Lord and “all these things will be added unto you.”
