Happy Thanksgiving!!

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor, and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness. Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. That we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks, for His kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation, for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of His providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war, for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed, for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which He hath been pleased to confer upon us. And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions, to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually, to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed, to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord. To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and Us, and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best. Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789. - George Washington

1 Peter 3:10 (tap to read)

GUILEnoun gile. Craft; cunning; artifice; duplicity; deceit

EVIL
2556 kakós (an adjective, and the root of 2549/kakía, "inner malice") – properly, inwardly foulrotten (poisoned); (figuratively) inner maliceflowing out of a morally-rotten character (= the "rot is already in the wood").

The word evil here refers to all types of evil that can be spoken.  A positive way to say this is found in Ephesians 4:29

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

We fool ourselves into thinking it is ok to talk about someone judgmentally, if the thing we are saying is ‘true.’  The truth is, unless we are saying that thing to build up the person, or to try to help in the situation, we are truly just telling it to delight ourselves in gossip.  We edify ourselves in effect stating how much better we are than the person we are talking about.  We also put ourselves in the position of God, presuming we know what someone’s motives are, when in truth, we don’t know why we do some of the things we ourselves do.

For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.  1 Corinthians 2:11

Make no mistake, we will answer for every word spoken, every hurt caused by our tongue, and will be judged as we have judged.  Remember, Jesus is in the business of forgiveness and of building up our weak faith and lives.  Satan is in the business of destroying.

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. John 10:10

If someone has truly done wrong, don’t worry, God will judge.  They will not escape his judgement.  But if we engage our tongues, then we give God cause to judge us as well.

“A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.  Matthew 12:35-37”

Psalm 148:7a,9,13 (Tap to view)

“Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: Praise him in the heights. Praise ye him, all his angels: Praise ye him, all his hosts. Praise ye him, sun and moon: Praise him, all ye stars of light. Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, And ye waters that be above the heavens. Let them praise the name of the LORD: For he commanded, and they were created. He hath also stablished them for ever and ever: He hath made a decree which shall not pass. Praise the LORD from the earth, Ye dragons, and all deeps: Fire, and hail; snow, and vapours; Stormy wind fulfilling his word: Mountains, and all hills; Fruitful trees, and all cedars: Beasts, and all cattle; Creeping things, and flying fowl: Kings of the earth, and all people; Princes, and all judges of the earth: Both young men, and maidens; Old men, and children: Let them praise the name of the LORD: For his name alone is excellent; His glory is above the earth and heaven. He also exalteth the horn of his people, The praise of all his saints; Even of the children of Israel, a people near unto him. Praise ye the LORD.”
